Since December 2018, when Two Crowns was released, the community debates about the function of the lighthouse upgrades.
At first, the wiki user Tybald the brave added to our article a very relevant piece of information, that said:
“ The lighthouse can only survive a certain amount of days. „
And as a reference he shared a link to a live stream where developer Gordon said that exact same sentence to Jack Pattillo while they showcased the game just before the release.
Then, a couple of days later, I added what seemed to be the obvious based only on the information we already had: “The more upgrades it receives, the longer the structure will survive.”
During the next months, players would come to the wiki to share their experiences with the lighthouse and their doubts about the purpose of the upgrades. The most common hypotheses shared in the comments were:
- The higher the tier, the slower that island decays.
- Lighthouses give only a chance of leaving the ship intact, with chances being better the higher the tier.
- The lighthouse gets destroyed after travelling to its respective island a certain numbers of times. So the lighthouse tiers would allow for safely traveling to an island for an additional number of times.
By April 2019 annomymous users started including them in the article with no references. The information seemed so diverse, that I remove the unconfirmed info and restricted the edition of the article, so it could only be done by logged users. And I added a link to a thread where users could share videos and screenshots about the subject.
Then we got some memes:
- “Maybe its just for show lmao.”—McPopcorn
- “When you actually have too much money and don't know what to spend it on.”—Fandom user
And some interesting replies like:
- “I arrived on an island with a crashed boat where I had buit a lighthouse once but I hadn't thought to record it.”
But still, no confirmation whatsoever.
Two years of doubts and speculations that have ended when a user (this time on Reddit) asked the question again: “what do the lighthouse upgrades do?”; and finally got an answer from a developer:
“ Let me clear it up:
- All Lighthouses give 100% chance to land at the Lighthouse when you return to an island. If you have no Lighthouse you have 100% chance to crash the boat and need to build it again.
- Each tier of Lighthouse has a higher decay resistance. It takes longer for them to break down. They do decay over time, and if when you return to an island and the light house is decayed: you crash the boat.
- Lighthouses will only decay if there are no walls present on the island.
