This is about Kingdom Two Crowns.
If the Kingdom has at least one subject with a shield (squire, knight, archer or builder) the shield totem will appear behind the outermost wall, allowing the Monarch to call everyone with a shield from that side to form a shield wall outside the wall for one coin, protecting the Kingdom and slowing down the advance of the Greed wave. When in a shield wall formation, the defenders will start retreating to the nearest wall when they start getting overwhelmed by the Greed. Since it costs only one coin to make the subjects form a shield wall, it makes the shield totem an invaluable and highly effective defense buff, especially on later islands and days as the Greed waves become stronger and Crushers start appearing in nightly waves.
While forming a shield wall, the defenders become immune to Crusher's charge, allowing them to stop the Crusher just like a tier 3 or higher wall would and kill it quickly afterwards, as the Crusher's actual health is relatively low. If subjects with shields are called to form a shield wall by the shield totem while the Greed are at the walls, then the defenders become immune to attacks from the Greed and push them back until they get into their position.
During the time an assault squad is in shield wall formation, they are not available to be sent in a portal attack. Even if the nightly wave has been defeated on that side, they remain in the wall formation until the morning bell, when they go back to their regular routine. That's when the coin slots for that group of warriors reappear on the outer wall banner.
